[edit] MUD Definition

(From "help lawsys":)

Ok, this is a basic breakdown of what will happen from the time you commit a crime, until you are punished.

1. You commit crime.

  • crime is logged.

1a. If the crime is committed inside of Mordor, the crime is not logged and is not reportable. The same goes for Minas Morgul

2. Victim finds who committed the crime 2a. A player investigates if the victim is unsure who the criminal is

  • Players skilled in the 'intuition' skill can investigate a crime, and try to determine who did it.
  • This is possible with both steals and kills.

2b. Crime is reported by the victim.

  • There is a statute of limitations on crimes. If it isn't reported within 7 RL days (that's Real Life to the mud-impaired), then it is no longer reportable.
  • Only the victim can report the crime.
  • They have to name a suspect.
  • If the suspect isn't the person who committed the crime and the suspect pleads innocent, then the suspect gets off and the victim must pay court costs - which multiplies for each false report
  • If an attempted murder was committed, the victim must report BEFORE logging off or going linkdead.
  • You cannot be reported for attacking anonymous figures

3. A guy walks up and gives you a letter.

  • the letter is a subpoena (an order to appear in court)
  • it says you are charged with (insert crime here) and that you must report to the nearest judge and enter your plea
  • You have one hour of playing time. A login message will remind you.

3b. If the victim changes their mind, they can 'withdraw report' and cancel the subpoena.

4. You report to the nearest judge and enter your plea

  • If you plead not guilty you have a chance of not being convicted but if you are the fines will be higher
  • If you plead guilty the judge tells you your fine and gives you a time period in which to pay it.
  • If you are guilty of attempted murder or murder you will become "wanted" right away. ...this is also when you can attempt to bribe the judge if you are a thief or assassin.

4a. If you become "wanted" immediately because of being guilty of attempted murder or murder, you still have a chance to pay off your fine and get off the "wanted" list. If you fail to do this then you will stay "wanted"

5. From the time you are fined (either by pleading guilty or not pleading within one hour) you receive messages when you log on indicating your fine and the time left to pay it. 5a. You pay your fine within the time. The victim gets some compensation for your offense. 5b. You don't pay, so you become wanted after time runs out.

  • Wanted posters go up in the post offices: ex. Manwe is wanted
  • Any player may become a deputy in a courthouse, and try to handcuff you.
  • Any player can now also legally kill you!
  • Hiding at places where no deputy can arrest you (handcuff) is ILLEGAL, and will be punished accordingly to 'help nuke'.
  • Hiding on mounts and on flying beasts is NOT illegal.

6. You are handcuffed by a deputy.

  • Once handcuffed, you the criminal are locked into combat with the deputy. Neither of you will be able to move, until:

6a. If your hit points fall too low the deputy hauls you off to a jail cell. 6b. If the deputy's hit points fall too low, the handcuffs are broken and the criminal (or the deputy) may escape. 7. Ok, now you are taken from your cell to court..where you go through a simulated trial...that will give you a slim chance of not being convicted. The judge will give you a sentence, which will be a larger fine...and you cant leave until you pay it. (in the case of multiple Pkillers...death sentence? *cackle*)

8. You are sent back to your cell until you pay the fine, or it is sucked out of you in the form of stats and skills and possibly exp.

  • In the case of multiple pkillers...who get death sentence...you would be issued a LARGE fine...and if you cant pay it...then the executioner comes for you. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • If you pay the fine, or after it is sucked out of you...you are set free outside the jail.

9. If you can avoid being caught for 1 day of age the warrant is dropped

Crime Breakdown:

  • False Report - wrongly accusing someone of a crime. Make sure you know who commited it before you accuse.
  • Attempted Steal - a failed attempt to take belongings. Thieves get a 10% discount off the bribe cost for this offence.
  • Steal - taking things from an unwilling person. No bribe for this crime.
  • Attempted Murder - A failed attempt on a persons life. You will have 10 minutes to pay your fine before going wanted. Assassins get a 10% discount off the cost of a bribe for this offence.
note: Attempted murder fines are capped at 5000 gold.
  • Murder - Taking the life of another character other than in self-defense. You will have 10 minutes to pay your fines before going wanted for this crime. You may not bribe the judge for Murder.
note: Murder fines are capped at 10000 gold.

If the criminal pleads innocent he has a 5% chance to not be convicted. If convicted, the criminal faces a 10% fine increase.

Emotes of crimes:

To keep from being fooled by crime emotes, look for the following messages, none of which can be emoted:

You catch XXX trying to steal YYY from you!

You noticed that XXX stole YYY from you!

You are attacked by XXX!

Without warning, XXX stabs you from behind!

  • NOTE: Attacking a horse when someone is riding it is no longer considered attempted murder, because of the recent changes to mounts.

Killing a horse or other mount is considered an act of theft against the owner of the mount and is reportable as such (theft). The owner of the horse must be online for the act to be a crime.

It is illegal to abuse the lawsys to 'drain' ones character, or otherwise convert ones arrests into monetary gain.

[edit] Playerkilling (PK)

(From "help playerkilling":)

The Two Towers allows playerkilling.

Playerkilling is against the in-game laws, however. A player that either murders or attempts to murder another player can be fined, with a portion of the fine going to the victim for restitution.

There are areas in the game world which have been declared unlawful and not subject to the in-game laws or fines. Currently these areas are Mordor and Minas Morgul. Players should only enter these areas if they accept that they may be killed without restitution.

For the Evil Races, there is no in-game law against killing another Evil Race. An Evil Race (ER) is subject to the will of the warlords, and must answer to the warlords if they kill a fellow ER.

There are times when playerkilling is against our rules, and these include:

1. Spreekilling, killing an excessive number of players within a short amount of time.

2. Levelbashing, killing a player repeatedly as a form of harassment.

3. Killing or causing the death of a new player.

There is no set number of kills that defines when normal playerkilling ends and spreekilling, levelbashing, or newbiekilling begins. Decision rests in the hands of the administration based on the details of the situation.

Any method of killing another player by a means that circumvents the in-game law system will be considered a bug and subject to the bugabuse rules.

[edit] Playerstealing

(From "help playerstealing":)

The Two Towers allows playerstealing. At any time a player may use the steal command to steal gold or items from any other player.

Playerstealing is against the in-game laws, however. A player that attempts to steal from or steals from another player can be fined, with a portion of the fine going to the victim to help re-coop their losses.

There are areas in the game world which have been declared unlawful and not subject to the in-game laws or fines. Currently these areas are Mordor and Minas Morgul. Players should only enter these areas if they accept that they may be stolen from without restitution.

Repeated stealing from the same player as a form of harassment is not allowed.

[edit] Corpselooting (Killstealing)

(From "help corpselooting":)

Killstealing is the act of taking gold or items from the corpse of a creature you did not kill and without the permission of the killer. It is also the act of attacking an NPC with whom another player is already engaged in combat for the purposes of taking the items that player has been trying to gain for themselves.

Killstealing rules do not apply if the original attacker leaves the room for any reason. Once the corpse or NPC is left alone in the room, it is open for anyone to take.

The Two Towers does not recognize the concept of a "camp". A player or group of players at an NPC but not engaged in combat has no exclusive right to the NPC's items until combat begins.
