T2T is populated not only by player characters, but also by non-player characters (NPCs), sometimes known as monsters or mons. The most direct way of gaining experience is killing NPCs. Some NPCs perform services (shopkeepers, gossipers, innkeepers, trainers) while others have their own specific traits (mounts, peltable animals, etcetera).
Many NPCs belong to specific races, and all have alignments, which you can view by using the align command. Most guilds have restrictions on what alignments and races they can kill and which they can't.
