(from "help levelling":)

Levelling is the main goal of your character on The Two Towers. The levels your character may be range from 1 to 25. When your character is created, it enters the world as a level 1 character with no experience, 20 points of each stat, and no skills.

In order to view the status of your stats and experience, type 'score'. This presents a nice tabulated view of the state of your character. To see your skill level, type 'skills'.

In order to 'level up' your character, you must fight monsters (non-player characters) in order to gain experience from killing them, and gold from any spoils you can pick off their corpse. Using the gold, you can visit various trainers throughout Arda who will train you in various stats in exchange for gold. The prices shown at the trainer when you type 'cost' is the amount it will cost you to train 1 point of that particular stat. Most trainers will also induct you into their profession, which gives you the opportunity to train 'professional skills' (also viewable using 'skills'), which will make your life in Arda much easier.

Looking at 'help levels', you will see the thresholds that you will need to match in order to be able to achieve the next level for your character. For example, to reach level 2, you need to have 501 experience points, but you do not need to train any stats above the 20 that are already given to you at character creation. But to reach level 3, you need to train your stats so that they reach an average of 25. Your average stat rating can be seen in 'score' - it is to the right of your experience points: 'Avg. Stats'.

Once you have the experience and average stats needed to attain the next level, you should go to a trainer and type 'advance' (or whatever command the particular trainer uses - looking at the trainer usually gives you the right commands). The trainer will advance you to the next level.

However, levelling does not continue this simply all the way to level 25. In order to achieve levels 5, 10, 15 and 19, and all levels above 19, you must complete certain 'level quests'. Even if you achieve the experience and stat requirements for the next level, but have not completed the appropriate part of the 'main quest', you will not be permitted to advance in level. You will receive a message similar to 'Not enough questing done.'

Another example of special requirements to level is that in order to become level 4, you must:

  • give yourself a description using the 'describe' command.
  • read 'help rules'
  • read 'help comm_policy', in order to familiarize yourself with the standards of behaviour that we expect from our players (once you reach level 4 you will be given access to the 'main comm' - a comm line like the newbiecomm, but available to all players who are level 4 and above.
