[edit] MUD Definition

From "help hobbit":

The hobbits are a race of halflings (short people). They are known for their quietness and ability to move around without being noticed. They are not very strong at all, but they are quick. The hobbits are a simple race that doesn't understand much about the ways of magic. They make good thieves and average warriors.

[edit] Hobbits Extended

At this time most hobbits live within the Shire, in Buckland, or in Breeland (specifically Staddle). There are also, however, isolated outsiders living in out-of-the-way places, perhaps more than the Shire-hobbits would believe. The innate hobbit stealth would make these groups quite hard to locate.

The halflings are an unusually gentle race--to date, no hobbit has ever intentionally killed another within the bounds of the Shire. They also have surprising reserves of physical and inner fortitude, loving comfort but enduring great hardships when necessary.

The ancient history of hobbits is uncertain. They seem to be a division of the Mannish race and can further be divided into Fallohide, Harfoot, and Stoor strains. Even the Elves do not know when they entered the Western world, and their own records are practically nonexistent before the Shire's founding. It seems they settled quietly in the Vales of Anduin ages ago. The three strains subsequently began wandering again and eventually made their way to the modern Hobbit lands. They adopted the local language wherever they went, remembering few if any words from their ancestral tongue. Only a handful of these, such as "smial" and "mathom", are known today.
