Harfoots are the smallest and most common Hobbit strain. If a hobbit's genealogy cannot otherwise be determined, he or she is most likely a Harfoot. They are friendliest toward Men.
The Harfoots were the first of the three groups to enter Eriador, fleeing the growing darkness of Mirkwood. They settled first near Bree, where Fallohidish hobbits soon joined them and led many to the Shire. Breelanders still refer to the Shire as a "colony" because of this.
