[edit] MUD Definition
From "help dunlending":
Dunlendings are a subdivision of Men, and founded Dunland in the Second Age. These wild men are in frequent conflict with the Eorlings who live in Rohan, and while not considered a purely evil race, they are easily spurred towards violence against their neighbours and are not counted among the allies of Gondor or the Elves. Like the Edain, Dunlendings are the average race on The Two Towers. They are a good race to pick for first time players who favour a less moral existence in our world.
[edit] Dunlendings Extended
The Dunlendings are a fierce and insular people, mistrusting anyone outside the clans. The Gondorians and Rohirrim were especially hated for displacing them from Calenardhon/Rohan. They are wary of elves and most will kill orcs on sight, although some fought alongside Saruman's Uruk-hai. Dwarves of the Longbeard clan and Stoorish Hobbits both had dwellings in Dunland in the past, so Dunlendings may look upon them with a slightly more favorable eye. Dunlendings speak Dunael (Dunlendish in the books). Their proudest moment was during the Long Winter, when Wulf led them to victory over Helm Hammerhand. The reign of Wulf lasted less than a year before the Rohirrim took Rohan back, however, adding more fuel to the fires of Dunlending hatred.
[edit] Dunlendings, Good or Evil?
The Dunlendings were recruited into service by Saruman, who used his power of persuasion and the Dunlending hatred of the Eorlings to spur them to march to war. As is Saruman's nature, he spread lies about the Rohirric culture and demonized them. The battle of Helm's Deep was fought March 3rd and 4th, TA 3019. After the battle, the Dunlendings surrendered and the Eorlings made them swear an oath to never raise arms against the Riddermark and that they would be free to go. This came as a shock to the Dunlendings, because of Saruman's lies.
The setting of the mud is March 15th, a week after the battle of Helm's Deep. The Dunlendings, on a whole, are not considered an 'evil race' - they are no longer in the service or sway of either Sauron or Saruman. However they are not wholly good either - many remember their long-standing feud with the Eorlings and will not easily find it easy to set aside that. There may also be separate settlements which have not yet learned of the oath and still believe they're fighting for Saruman.
This means that in game terms it is possible to roleplay a Dunlending as Good, Evil, or Neutral, and they are considered a Free Race.
