[edit] MUD Definition

From "help alignment":

Here on T2T there are two kinds of alignment: character alignment and mud alignment. Here's what they are and how they will affect you and your playing environment...

  • Character Alignment
If you have ever played another role playing game on another mud, you will already have some idea of what this is. This is basically your character's nature. Each person has their own fundamental tendencies such as good natured and helpful or pissed off and destructive. Character alignment is basically a measure of this, indicating your character's natural tendencies. The Valar would certainly like to see you role play your character as much as possible. That is, develop a certain personality for your character. Just keep in mind that being "good" or "evil" both have their advantages and disadvantages... one side doesn't have more power than the other here. Your alignment is changed depending on what you kill: if you kill "evil" NPCs you become more "good", and vice versa. Character alignment is displayed by an alignment title at the end of a character's title (i.e. Orome the elven Wolf Spirit (Impartial)).
Note: Evil races have locked alignments, they get more and more evil as they level up.
  • Mud Alignment
T2T is set at a time before the One Ring is destroyed by Frodo. Unlike the book, however, the end here is not certain. Here on T2T Sauron can still prevail over Good. Then again, maybe the Good guys could pull off a victory... Who knows? To express this potential for Good conquering Evil or Evil over Good we have developed a mud "alignment". Basically what this is is a system of global announcements that give an indication of how the War is going. The more evil creatures that are killed the more optimistic the message. The more good creatures that are killed, the closer the forces of Sauron are to capturing the One Ring and ruling the world. Also, as the forces of evil gain power in Arda, the more of them that show up (i.e. more evil creatures like orcs and trolls are loaded into the game). You will receive messages reflecting how well your side is doing in the game. *WARNING* Realize now that the Good Guys are gonna have one hell of a time swinging the tide of the battle in their favor. The possibility of victory for the Forces of Good in Tolkien's works was bleak and it is no different here. You are going to have to work hard to influence the tide of the battle...
